The Estate: Domaine Schlumberger was established in 1810 by Nicolas Schlumberger in the town of Guebwiller, Alsace. The winery has been family-owned for over two centuries and is now managed by the 6th and 7th generations of the Schlumberger family. They expanded their vineyard holdings significantly over the years, developing a reputation for excellence in viticulture and winemaking. The estate is recognized not only for its wines but also for its commitment to preserving the heritage and traditions of the Alsace wine region. They are the largest privately-owned vineyard in Alsace, covering approximately 130 hectares (about 320 acres). The estate is noted for its exceptional terroir diversity. It includes steep terraced vineyards on the slopes of the Vosges Mountains, which offer varying microclimates and soil compositions ideal for different grape varieties. They are particularly known for their Grand Cru vineyards, with around 70 hectares classified under this prestigious designation. Notable Grand Crus include Kitterlé, Kessler, Saering, and Spiegel. They practice sustainable and biodynamic viticulture, reduced of use of chemicals, implemented cover cropping, and adopted organic practices to maintain soil health and biodiversity. The estate holds certifications for its sustainable practices, reflecting its commitment to environmental stewardship.
The ‘Les Princes Abbés’ series is named in honor of the abbots of the Prince Abbey of Murbach, who historically owned vineyards in the area. This line of wines is crafted to reflect the rich tradition and exceptional terroir of Alsace. The region’s semi-continental climate, with warm, sunny days and cool nights, is ideal for developing the aromatic richness and balanced acidity of Pinot Gris.
Suggested food and wine pairing: Its balanced sweetness and rich texture is ideal for poultry, pork, and veal dishes, especially those with creamy or slightly spicy sauces. Asian cuisine (Thai, Vietnamese, Sushi, Indian - mildly spiced dishes like chicken korma or butter chicken; Moroccan Tagine), foie gras, smoked salmon, chicken (roast or with creamy mushroom sauce), seafood (scallops, lobster, crab), mushroom risotto, butternut squash ravioli, vegetable tarts, cheese platters, charcuterie (salty and savoury cured meats).
