Lanson, Le Black Label, Brut Champagne

Type: Champagne
Grape(s): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier
Wine Region: Reims, Champagne

Winemaking: Sustainable, vegan

Tasting Notes: Expect lively citrus notes (lemon or grapefruit), stone fruit (peach and apricot), adding a subtle sweetness and depth to the flavor profile, a characteristic note of brioche or freshly baked bread, derived from the aging process on lees, which enhances complexity and texture. Subtle mineral and delicate honeyed tones on the finish, offering a touch of sweetness that balances the acidity.

The Estate: Lanson was established in 1760 in Reims, one of the principal cities in the Champagne region. This makes it one of the oldest Champagne houses, with over 260 years of winemaking tradition. The estate is located in Reims, which is known for its chalky soils that are ideal for growing the grapes used in Champagne production, such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier. They are known for its adherence to traditional Champagne-making techniques. This includes handpicking grapes, fermentation in stainless steel tanks, and aging in cellars carved out of chalk. One distinctive feature of Lanson Champagne is its use of non-malolactic fermentation. This helps preserve the natural acidity and freshness of the wine, giving it a crisp and vibrant character. Over the centuries, Lanson has been owned by several famous families. It is currently part of the Lanson-BCC Group, which includes other prestigious Champagne houses like Besserat de Bellefon and Chanoine Frères.

Le Black Label Brut is particular non-Vintage Champagne characterized by its freshness, fruitiness, and crisp acidity. The name "Le Black Label" suggests a sophisticated and possibly more intense expression compared to other Lanson offerings.

Suggested food and wine pairing: Oysters, smoked salmon, sushi and sashimi, an excellent match is grilled or roasted chicken or turkey in creamy sauces, light seafood, seafood pasta, salads (with vinaigrette dressings, or with strawberries or apples), Thai and Vietnamese dishes, cheese (Brie, Camembert, Cheddar, Gruyere), desserts (fruit-based, light pastries).
