Tasting Notes: Delivers a complex nose of black fruit, spices, chocolate. Powerful and complex on the palate offering up a heady mix of morello, cocoa, liquorice, tobacco, and prune. Full and structured, beautiful length with elegant tannins.

 

The Estate: Château Montrose's origins date back to the early 19th century. It was founded in 1815 by Etienne Théodore Dumoulin. The estate quickly gained recognition for its high-quality wines and was classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, a prestigious ranking that remains significant today. The estate is situated in the Médoc region on the left bank of the Gironde estuary. The vineyards benefit from an exceptional terroir, characterized by its gravelly soil and proximity to the river, which helps moderate temperatures and reduce the risk of frost. The gravelly soil, along with the estates meticulous vineyard management, contributes to the unique character and quality of its wines.

 

The wines of Château Montrose are known for their power, structure, and longevity. They typically exhibit deep color, rich fruit flavors, and firm tannins, making them well-suited for extended aging. The wine's complexity and depth develop beautifully over time. 2005 vintage is one of the greatest in history.

 

Suggested food and wine pairing: Wine is great with steak (ribeye, sirloin), grilled lamb, game, beef stew, short ribs, charcuterie board, hard cheeses (parmesan, Manchego, aged cheddar), mushroom risotto, stuffed mushrooms, lentil stew, grilled sausage, grilled vegetables.
